Fitzroy Gardens, Urban park in East Melbourne, Australia
Fitzroy Gardens is a 26-hectare park in East Melbourne featuring ornamental lakes, tree-lined avenues, fountains, and sculptures spread across numerous pathways through dense plantings of native and exotic trees. The grounds include a visitor center, cafe, and conservatory building.
The park began in 1848 with design by Clement Hodgkinson and planting by James Sinclair, creating a Victorian-era landscape with winding paths throughout. This early period established the garden's classic layout that remains today.
The scarred tree here shows Aboriginal connection to this land, marking where indigenous people once stripped bark for traditional craft and tool-making.
Entry is available from multiple points along Wellington Parade and Lansdowne Street, with a visitor center and cafe within the grounds. The flat terrain makes it easy to walk different routes at your own pace.
The Model Tudor Village built in the 1940s features tiny English Tudor buildings with detailed architectural work scattered throughout the park. This miniature reproduction offers a playful contrast against the natural surroundings.
