Cremorne Gardens, Pleasure garden in Richmond, Victoria, Australia
Cremorne Gardens was a leisure park situated on the banks of the Yarra River in Richmond, spanning about ten acres with a lake formed from a natural billabong. The grounds contained landscaped gardens alongside various entertainment facilities distributed throughout the property.
James Ellis founded Cremorne Gardens in 1853, drawing inspiration from similar pleasure grounds he had previously managed along the River Thames in London. The venture introduced the Victorian leisure garden concept to Australia and shaped early entertainment culture in Melbourne.
The garden featured theatrical performances, concerts, firework displays, a bowling alley, menagerie, dancers, and a Royal Pantheon Theatre.
Visitors could reach the grounds by paddle-steamer called the Gondola from Princes Bridge or use a dedicated railway station for access. The riverside location provided multiple transport options depending on availability and preference.
William Dean launched Australia's first balloon flight from this location in 1858, traveling about seven miles northward to Brunswick. This aviation milestone made the site a memorable landmark in the nation's transport history.
