National Bank House, Commercial skyscraper in Melbourne, Australia

National Bank House is a 161-metre commercial skyscraper on Bourke Street in Melbourne, near the crest of the western hill. It has 40 storeys of offices and was designed by Godfrey and Spowers. A 2009 refurbishment by owner ISPT rebuilt the ground level with a new lobby, a street canopy and refurbished rear plaza cafes, designed by John Wardle Architects.

Built in the mid-1970s as a speculative office tower near the crest of the western hill of Bourke Street, National Bank House was completed in 1978 and fully occupied by the National Bank of Australia as its headquarters. In 1982 that bank merged with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney to form the National Australia Bank (NAB). In 2004 NAB moved its global head offices to National @ Docklands, though it remains a full tenant; in 2009 owner ISPT refurbished the building to 5-star energy efficiency, rebuilding the ground level with a new lobby, rear plaza cafes and a street canopy by John Wardle Architects.

The tower's name recalls the National Bank of Australia, which took the whole speculative building as its headquarters on completion in 1978. In 1982 the bank merged with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney to form the National Australia Bank, known as NAB. NAB moved its global head offices to National @ Docklands in 2004 but remains a full tenant, so the name still matches the signage and the bank inside.
