Doncaster East, Residential suburb in Melbourne, Australia
Doncaster East is a residential suburb in the east of Melbourne, within the City of Manningham, made up mostly of houses on hilly streets with a main shopping strip along Doncaster Road. Patches of green space and creek corridors run through the suburb, breaking up the housing around it.
The area was settled in the 1860s by German immigrants who farmed the land and grew orchards, calling their small community Waldau. From the 1960s onward, housing development spread quickly across the former farmland, giving the suburb the shape it has today.
Doncaster East sits on Wurundjeri Country, and signs of that connection can still be found in the area today, including place names and local landmarks. The suburb also has a large Chinese community, which shapes the food, shops, and daily rhythm of several local streets.
The suburb sits right off the Eastern Freeway, making it fairly straightforward to drive into central Melbourne, though a car is useful for getting around locally. Several bus routes also connect the area to the city, though frequency can vary depending on the time of day.
Mullum Mullum Creek, which flows through the suburb, forms part of a wildlife corridor that stretches well beyond the area, allowing animals to move through otherwise built-up land. The trail along the creek is one of the few places in the suburb where you can walk for a long stretch without crossing a road.
