Simpson Barracks, Military barracks in Yallambie, Australia.
Simpson Barracks is a military base in the suburb of Yallambie, northeast of Melbourne in Victoria. The grounds bring together administrative buildings, workshops, training facilities, and support services for defense personnel.
The site was originally known as Watsonia Camp and was used after World War Two to receive and care for prisoners of war returning from Japanese camps. Over the following decades it grew into a permanent military base and took on its current name.
Two military museums inside the grounds display uniforms, weapons, and personal objects connected to conflicts in which Australian forces took part. Visiting these collections gives a direct sense of how service life shaped the daily experience of ordinary soldiers.
Access to a military base is generally limited to authorized personnel and registered visitors, so it is worth checking beforehand whether entry is possible. Public transport reaches the northeastern suburbs of Melbourne, but having a private vehicle makes the journey considerably easier.
The chapel on the grounds was modeled after a church in Nui Dat, South Vietnam, where Australian troops were stationed during the Vietnam War. Since it opened in 1971, it has been the setting for well over 200 weddings of military personnel and their families.
