St. Petka Macedonian Orthodox Church, Mill Park, Macedonian Orthodox church in Mill Park, Melbourne, Australia
St. Petka Macedonian Orthodox Church is a bluestone building with slate roof tiles and extensions on both sides located in Mill Park. The structure combines Victorian architectural elements with later additions that expanded the space for the congregation.
The building was originally constructed in 1861 as Janefield Presbyterian Church and served that congregation for over a century. The Australian-New Zealand Macedonian Orthodox Diocese purchased it in the late 1990s and transformed it to serve the Macedonian Orthodox community.
Inside, Byzantine-Orthodox designs and frescoes painted by a Romanian iconographer create a traditional Eastern Orthodox atmosphere. These elements help worshippers connect with their spiritual heritage during services.
The church hosts Divine Liturgies, weddings, baptisms, and religious celebrations throughout the year. Visitors should check ahead for service times or visit during major religious observances to experience the community gathering.
The building appears on the Victorian Heritage Register and demonstrates how it served different faith communities from 1861 until the late 1990s. After being purchased by the diocese, it underwent extensive repairs and was reborn with its current purpose.
