Northcote Koori Mural, Aboriginal mural in Thornbury, Australia.
The Northcote Koori Mural is a painted wall at the edge of Sir Douglas Nicholls Sporting Complex on St Georges Road in Thornbury. It spans a free-standing surface and displays Aboriginal art created across multiple panels featuring different artistic elements.
The mural was created between 1983 and 1985 by art teacher Megan Evans and Aboriginal elder Lin Onus, working alongside trainee artists. It underwent restoration in 2013 using digital printing technology to maintain its visual content.
The mural displays reproductions of historical artworks by Tommy McRae and William Barak, depicting Aboriginal people and their lived experiences through detailed imagery. These representations remain active in the local community's conversation about identity and shared history.
The mural is located opposite the Aboriginal Advancement League building and is easy to locate from the street. Visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the color details and artistic elements on display.
The artwork features political statements about Aboriginal incarceration depicted through men wearing neck chains, based on historical photographs from colonial times. These visual elements directly confront viewers with difficult historical realities.
