Bishops Lodge, Heritage house museum in Hay, New South Wales, Australia.
Bishops Lodge is an 1888 house with iron construction located at Moama Street in Hay. The single-story building features a central courtyard, corrugated iron walls, and a surrounding verandah.
Architect John Sulman designed the building in 1888 for Sydney Linton, the first Anglican Bishop of Riverina. After Linton left in the 1930s, it was later repurposed as a boys' school.
The house reflects how it transformed from a bishop's home to a boys' hostel and eventually became a public museum. Objects on display show the different purposes the building served over the decades.
The museum is located on Moama Street and welcomes visitors. It is best to contact the local Visitor Centre first to confirm opening times and accessibility details.
The building was constructed with sawdust insulation and raised ventilation ridges on the roof. These design features protected the interior from extreme summer heat and represent clever climate control from the 1800s.
