Hobart Zoo, Zoo in Battery Point and Queens Domain, Australia
Hobart Zoo was a facility spread across two locations, featuring a mix of Tasmanian animals and exotic species such as lions, tigers, and polar bears. The enclosures were distributed across Battery Point and the Queens Domain grounds.
The facility opened in 1895 at Battery Point and relocated to Queens Domain in 1923. It eventually closed in 1937 due to financial difficulties.
The zoo served as a place where people could encounter Tasmanian devils and other native species up close. Educational programs helped visitors develop a deeper appreciation for animals that lived in their own region.
The Queens Domain site can be explored today through guided tours that require advance booking. Uneven ground means visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time for a leisurely walk.
The last known thylacine, a remarkable pouch-bearing mammal, died here in 1936. This death marked the end of a species that now exists only in historical records and memory.
