Yarralumla brickworks, Industrial heritage site in Canberra, Australia.
Yarralumla Brickworks is a former brick-making facility in the Yarralumla suburb of Canberra, Australia, with a quarry, several kilns, and production buildings spread across the grounds. The site is now accessible as a heritage area and retains much of its original industrial layout.
The facility opened in 1913 as the first manufacturing plant in the Australian Capital Territory. Production expanded sharply in the 1920s to meet the demand for bricks as Canberra was being built up as the new federal capital.
The Staffordshire kiln on the grounds shows how workers shaped and fired bricks by hand in the early 20th century. Standing inside the structure gives visitors a clear sense of the physical effort that went into building the new capital.
The grounds are in the Yarralumla suburb, southwest of central Canberra, and can be reached by car or public transport. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the terrain is uneven and some of the older structures call for careful footing.
The kiln chimneys were deliberately built short so they would stay hidden below the treetops of the surrounding pine forest. This was not a technical constraint but a deliberate design choice to keep the industrial structures out of sight in the new capital's landscape.
