National Zoo & Aquarium

The National Zoo & Aquarium combines land animals and marine life in one location that spreads across Yarralumla. The grounds feature distinct sections for different animal groups, from large cats to fish and other water creatures.

The facility opened in 1990 as an aquarium before expanding to include a zoo section in 1992. This combination made it one of the few places in Australia where visitors can see both land and sea animals in one visit.

The place serves as a learning space where visitors encounter animals they might never see otherwise. Daily feeding demonstrations and talks help people understand wildlife behavior and why species protection matters.

The location has level pathways and access points suited for visitors with different mobility needs. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and plan for several hours, as the grounds are extensive enough to take time exploring different sections.

The location features a large water tunnel where visitors walk through while marine animals swim overhead. This section is often overlooked despite being one of the most memorable parts of a visit.
