Black Mountain Tower, Television tower at Black Mountain, Canberra, Australia
Black Mountain Tower, or Telstra Tower, is a television tower that rises 195.2 meters above the mountain's peak and includes observation decks. The structure serves as a working telecommunications facility for broadcasters and carriers across the Australian Capital Territory.
Construction started in 1972 under the Postmaster General's direction and was opened by the Prime Minister in 1980. The tower was built to broadcast radio and telecommunications signals across the entire region.
The tower sits on traditional lands of the Ngunnawal people, and their presence remains visible at this location. You can experience this connection to Aboriginal history in the region as you visit the mountain.
The tower is currently undergoing renovations and is not open to visitors. However, the mountain itself is easily accessible with parking available and walking paths around the peak.
The tower features a special lighting system that glows in different colors at night to honor charities, embassies, and special occasions. This colorful feature makes it a distinctive landmark in Canberra's skyline.
