Bungonia National Park

Bungonia National Park is a nature reserve in New South Wales featuring limestone formations, deep gorges, and over 200 caves spread across varied terrain. The park covers approximately 15 square kilometers and displays a landscape shaped by natural forces, with passages and open areas that create distinct environments throughout the site.

The area was first protected as a water reserve in 1872 to safeguard the Shoalhaven River, then later officially designated as a national park in 2010. This shift reflected a growing recognition of the site's importance as a protected area for its geological features and natural systems.

The lands hold deep significance for the Njunawal, Wandandian, and Gandangara peoples, whose ancestral routes for seasonal gathering activities shaped how people moved through the area. Today, walking through the park allows you to trace these connections and appreciate how the terrain was intimately known and used by these communities.

You need to register at the park office before entering and should bring suitable gear depending on what you plan to do, such as caving, rock climbing, or canyoning. The park holds rock formations from the Ordovician and Devonian periods, including metamorphosed sandstones and volcanic rocks that reveal millions of years of earth history. These ancient geological layers offer visitors a tangible connection to the deep past of the land itself.
