Coolangatta Mountain, Summit in Shoalhaven Region, Australia
Coolangatta Mountain rises about 300 meters above the Shoalhaven River Plain and is covered with dense native bushland. The mountain is managed by the Jerrinja Local Aboriginal Land Council, with portions designated as a protected area.
Alexander Berry established the Coolangatta Estate near the mountain in 1822, creating the first European settlement in the Shoalhaven region. This founding marked the beginning of European presence in the area.
The mountain is known as Cullunghutti in the Jerrinja language and represents their deep connection to this land. The Jerrinja people maintain their relationship with the place today through management and protection of sacred sites.
The mountain has access restrictions in place to protect sacred sites and is managed by the local Jerrinja authority. Visitors should check current access rules beforehand to show respect for cultural requirements.
Part of the mountain was placed under special protection in 2011 as Cullunghutti Aboriginal Area under the National Parks and Wildlife Act. This protection covers approximately 67 hectares of the southwestern slopes and honors the site's importance to the Jerrinja.
