CBC Bank Building, Kiama, historic site in New South Wales, Australia
The CBC Bank Building in Kiama is a two-story brick structure with Italianate design built in 1880 along Manning Street. The building retains original wooden fixtures, moldings, and slate roofing that reflect the craftsmanship of builders White and Coghill and the construction standards of that period.
Designed by Mansfield Bros in 1880, the building was erected during Kiama's growth as a trading port and served as the town's main bank for nearly 90 years. The bank relocated to Terralong Street around 1969, after which the structure housed law offices, veterinary services, and later an IT firm.
The building's name refers to the Colonial Bank of Canada, reflecting the town's connection to larger financial networks of the era. It serves as a quiet marker of how banking institutions once anchored daily business and social routines in small communities.
The building sits centrally on Manning Street in Kiama and is easily accessible on foot, located near other historic sites like the Kiama Post Office. The exterior can be viewed anytime as you walk through town, though the interior is currently in private use.
The building was placed under protection in 1979 at the owners' request and received a permanent conservation order in 1981, before being added to the State Heritage Register in 1999. This layered protection shows how local recognition of importance evolved into formal state-level acknowledgment of the site's heritage value.
