The Maltings, Industrial malting complex in Mittagong, Australia.
The Maltings is an industrial complex comprising three large brick buildings positioned along the Main Southern Railway and beside Nattai Creek. The structures date from the late 1800s and were purpose-built for processing grain into malt for brewing.
The facility was established in 1899 by the Malting Company of New South Wales to produce malt for breweries throughout Australia. Over decades, the site grew into one of the region's most significant production centers of its kind.
The complex marks an important chapter in Australian brewing history, serving as a major hub for malt production destined for breweries across the country.
The site is currently not open to visitors as a hotel developer pursues plans to convert it into a mixed-use facility. You can view the impressive red brick buildings and their location beside the historic railway line from the exterior.
The three malting buildings were designed so each could operate independently, allowing production to continue even during maintenance or if one structure was damaged. This smart design ensured breweries across the country always had a steady supply.
