Harper's Mansion

Harper's Mansion is a Georgian-style house in Berrima built from red clay brick and locally sourced sandstone, sitting prominently on a hilltop with formal gardens spanning about 2 acres. The two-story structure features symmetrical facades and is set within professionally maintained grounds.

James Harper built this residence starting in 1834 and completed it in 1844 using locally available materials and construction methods of the time. Following financial hardship, the property eventually passed into Catholic Church ownership and served as a presbytery for many years.

The Georgian design reflects skilled colonial craftsmanship through original woodwork, decorative plasterwork, and detailed ceiling ornamentation. These elements showcase the building methods and artistic practices of the period that shaped local construction traditions.
