Matiu / Somes Island, Historical island in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand.
Matiu or Somes Island sits in Wellington Harbour and covers about 25 hectares with walking trails, native forest areas, and viewpoints overlooking the water. The island provides different habitats for birds and other animals that live here in a protected setting.
The island opened as an animal quarantine station in 1889 and later served as an internment camp during both World Wars. These different roles shaped what the island means today.
The island holds deep meaning for Taranaki Whānui people, and its return to them in 2009 marked an important recognition of their connection to this place. Today you can see how the community actively cares for and protects the land.
Visitors reach the island by ferry from Wellington, a journey of about 20 minutes. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and bring weather protection, as some paths are steep and conditions can change quickly.
An automated lighthouse from 1900 stands on the island and warns ships of dangers in the harbour. This lighthouse still operates and you can see it working as you walk around the island.
