Hutt Recreation Ground, Public sports ground in Lower Hutt, New Zealand
Hutt Recreation Ground is a sports facility spanning seven hectares with open fields, a grandstand, playground, and skate ramp, bordered by pōhutukawa trees. The space combines multiple sports and recreational areas suited for different ages and activities.
The grounds were established in 1905 by the Hutt Amateur Athletic Club before the city council took over and expanded the site in 1908. During World War I, the area was temporarily converted to grow potatoes to help feed the local population.
The grounds host regular rugby matches, cricket games, and athletics events that shape the sporting life of the local community. It serves as a gathering place where residents come together throughout the year for competitions and team activities.
The grounds are freely accessible every day of the year and provide free parking plus a food stall for visitor convenience. Most of the space is open terrain, so plan for exposure to weather and bring appropriate protection depending on the season.
The pōhutukawa trees that border the grounds are native to Aotearoa and produce striking red flowers, particularly around December. These trees add natural beauty that many visitors notice especially during the summer months.
