Porirua Lunatic Asylum, Former psychiatric hospital in Porirua, New Zealand
Porirua Lunatic Asylum was a large medical facility located on an expansive property stretching from Rangituhi to present-day Porirua city center. The grounds contained various buildings and areas designed for patient accommodation and treatment.
The facility was established in 1887 to relieve overcrowding at Wellington's Mount View Asylum and initially housed 24 patients in its first building. Over time, it expanded significantly to accommodate the growing number of people requiring care.
The facility introduced work therapy programs where patients participated in farming and gardening to support their recovery. These hands-on activities became a central part of the treatment approach for people with mental health conditions.
The F Ward section of the former facility now houses the Porirua Hospital Museum, where you can learn about the medical history and institutional records. This museum area provides accessible insight into the site's past.
The facility was one of the largest institutions of its kind in New Zealand at its peak, employing hundreds of staff members. This enormous scale reflected the widespread challenges that healthcare faced.
