Nelson Cricket Ground, Cricket ground in Hastings, New Zealand
Nelson Cricket Ground is a cricket venue in Hastings featuring natural grass pitches and covered stands for spectators watching matches. The facility occupies an open space in the Hawke's Bay region with the layout designed for cricket events.
The site began as a school ground before being donated by Mr. and Mrs. W. Nelson in 1913 for public sports use. Cricket matches started there in 1878 when Hawke's Bay played against an Australian team.
The venue changed its name from Heretaunga School Ground in 1913 when Mr and Mrs W. Nelson transferred the property for community sports use.
The ground sits about 1 mile (1.6 km) from Hastings railway station, making it easy to reach on foot or by local transport. Walking directions from the station are straightforward for visitors attending matches.
The ground hosted an international women's hockey match between New Zealand and England in 1914 with around 5000 spectators present. This unusual sporting event showed the venue could accommodate sports beyond cricket.
