Anawhata, Black sand beach in Auckland Region, New Zealand.

Anawhata is a beach with dark volcanic sand nestled between rocky headlands and bordered by steep cliffs and native forest. The shoreline stretches for several hundred meters, defined by distinctive rock formations and small caves carved into the cliff face.

The beach was historically used by the local Maori community Te Kawerau ā Maki, who built seasonal settlements in the elevated rock shelters of the surrounding bluffs during fishing expeditions. These rock shelters served as strategic locations for fishing and resource storage.

The name Anawhata refers to the natural caves within the cliffs, which hold traditional stories of a noble woman rescued from imprisonment.

To reach this beach, take a 10-kilometer gravel road from Piha Road followed by a 30-minute steep descent through forest on foot. The trail is challenging, so wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water.

The beach contains a rock formation called Keyhole Rock that resembles a smaller version of the more famous Lion Rock at nearby Piha. This hidden formation often goes unnoticed by visitors who focus on the main beach features.
