Kerosene Creek Waterfall, Natural thermal waterfall near Rotorua, New Zealand.

Kerosene Creek Waterfall is a thermal cascade near Rotorua that drops about 6-7 feet (2 meters) into a large pool, with warm geothermal water flowing steadily throughout the year. The clear water reveals the streambed structure, and visitors can see how the continuous flow shapes the rocks and maintains stable temperatures in the surrounding pools.

The waterfall system formed through volcanic activity in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which continues to shape geothermal features across the region. Underground heat from this volcanic system pushes warm water to the surface, creating the thermal conditions that make this place unique today.

People gather here to soak and swim, often arranging smooth rocks along the creek to create personal bathing spots. This informal way of shaping the space shows how visitors and locals interact with the place together.

The location is about 30 minutes from Rotorua via State Highway 5 and Old Waiotapu Road, with a gravel track leading to the swimming area. Bring swimwear and a towel, as there are no facilities on site, and visit early in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds.

The constant flow of geothermal water creates a rare combination: a waterfall that never freezes or cools, while the pool stays inviting for swimming year-round. This natural balance between falling water and sustained heat is uncommon in most climates.
