Tauranga Harbour Bridge, Road bridge in Bay of Plenty Region, New Zealand
The Tauranga Harbour Bridge is a road crossing in Bay of Plenty made up of two parallel concrete structures that span across the harbor. The newer structure has three lanes heading toward Mount Maunganui, while the original has two lanes going toward the city center.
The original bridge opened in 1988 and replaced an older route that made travel more complicated. A second structure was added in the early 2000s to handle growing traffic between the two areas.
The bridge links two distinct parts of the city and shapes how the harbor area looks and feels. The waterfront and marina next to it are now gathering spots where locals spend time near the water.
When crossing, pay attention to which structure goes to your destination since each one heads in a different direction. It helps to know before driving which side you need to use.
Until 2001, drivers paid tolls at booths on the Mount Maunganui side of the crossing. Removing the toll booths freed up the bridge entirely and simplified travel between the two communities.
