Waimangu Geyser, Geothermal formation in Bay of Plenty Region, New Zealand.
The Waimangu Geyser expelled black water mixed with rocks and mud, reaching heights of 460 meters during its active period.
Between 1900 and 1904, this geyser maintained a regular eruption cycle of 36 hours until a landslide altered the Lake Tarawera water table.
The Maori people named this formation Waimangu, meaning Black Waters, reflecting the dark color of its ejected materials during eruptions.
The former geyser location remains accessible through guided tours in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, offering insights into geothermal processes.
Tourist guide Alfred Warbrick measured the geyser lake depth at 15 meters in 1903, using a rowboat despite the dangerous conditions.
