Sundrop Farms, solar thermal power plant with hydroponic greenhouse system
Sundrop Farms is a greenhouse and power facility in Port Augusta that grows tomatoes on a 20-hectare site while generating electricity and fresh water. A solar tower with over 23,000 mirrors concentrates sunlight to produce heat and power, while a desalination system converts seawater into usable fresh water.
The project started in 2009 with a small 0.2-hectare pilot facility before expanding to a 20-hectare operation beginning in 2015. This development coincided with the closure of Port Augusta's last coal power station, marking a regional shift toward renewable energy.
The name Sundrop reflects the sun-powered approach that defines the operation. Visitors can observe how the greenhouse demonstrates sustainable food production in a dry region, showing a shift in local attitudes toward clean energy and resource management.
Access is limited as this is an active working facility with security requirements. Guided tours are available and show the solar tower system, desalination process, and greenhouses, providing views of portions of the site rather than full access.
The facility displaces over 2 million liters of diesel annually through solar power, a remarkable environmental impact for a single operation. The project demonstrates that food production and power generation can be combined in extreme climate conditions through technological innovation.
