Corporate Town of Davenport, Former local government area in Port Augusta, South Australia
The Corporate Town of Davenport was an independent administrative region in Port Augusta that was divided into three wards. The area contained several hundred homes and was governed by its own council before it later merged with Port Augusta.
Davenport was founded in 1887 following a meeting at the Pastoral Hotel and operated as an independent municipality. In 1932 it merged with Port Augusta, ending its separate existence.
The government offices on Stirling Road served as a meeting place where residents gathered for council sessions and local discussions. This building shaped how the community came together and showed the importance residents placed on having a voice in local matters.
The area is best explored on foot, with the Stirling Road vicinity serving as the main focal point. Its location within Port Augusta makes it easy to combine with other parts of the city.
The final mayor Herbert Richard Holds shaped the municipality during its most challenging years from 1923 to 1932. His leadership during this transition period made him a figure who guided the changes as independence ended.
