Joy Baluch AM Bridge, Road bridge in Port Augusta, Australia
The Joy Baluch AM Bridge is a road bridge crossing Spencer Gulf near Port Augusta, connecting the city with Port Augusta West on the other side. The structure comprises two parallel sections with four lanes to handle traffic flow between the communities.
The bridge was built in 1972 to replace the earlier Great Western Bridge constructed in 1927. It was renamed in 2012 to honor a long-serving mayor of Port Augusta.
The bridge functions as a meeting point between eastern and western Australia, connecting travelers from Adelaide and Darwin to Perth across the Spencer Gulf.
The bridge offers a separate path for pedestrians and cyclists alongside the vehicle lanes, allowing safe crossing for all users. The road can be busy during peak times, so plan accordingly if you are traveling by vehicle or foot.
The bridge construction required 132 bridge beams and 46 piles, incorporating 1,500 tonnes of Australian steel and 2,000 meters of concrete barriers.
