Quandamooka people

Quandamooka people, Indigenous community in Moreton Bay region, Australia.

The Quandamooka are an indigenous people in the Moreton Bay region of southeastern Queensland, consisting of three tribes - Nunukul, Goenpul, and Ngugi - who inhabit the waters and islands of this bay. These three groups share common traditions and governance structures for their ancestral lands.

Archaeological findings show that this people maintained continuous residence in the Moreton Bay region for more than 25,000 years before European arrival. This long continuity shapes their relationship with this landscape and waters to this day.

The Quandamooka maintain deep connections to the waters and islands of Moreton Bay, where they have lived for thousands of years and express their relationship to the land through daily practices. Visitors can see how this connection comes alive in local exhibitions and storytelling through their art.

Visitors can experience their culture and art traditions through local exhibitions, such as those in Dunwich, where community organizations display their work. It helps to check ahead about current exhibitions and visiting opportunities in the Moreton Bay region.

In Dunwich, there is an art organization called Salt Water Murris that allows visitors to experience their artworks and storytelling traditions firsthand. This venue shows how contemporary artists express their connection to land and water through visual works.
