Sea Cliff Bridge

Sea Cliff Bridge, Coastal bridge in New South Wales, Australia

Description

The Sea Cliff Bridge extends 665 meters along the Pacific and connects the coastal towns of Coalcliff and Clifton with two traffic lanes and pedestrian paths made from concrete and steel. This structure follows a curved shape parallel to the shore and runs above open water with views of steep cliffs and surf below.

History

This structure opened on December 11, 2005, after the earlier coastal road had been damaged by repeated landslides and the route had to be closed frequently. The new design followed a plan to create a permanent connection between both towns without interruptions from unstable slopes.

Culture

This structure serves as a popular stop on the Grand Pacific Drive and is often used by cyclists and photographers who want to capture views of the coastline. The name refers to the steep rock faces that rise directly beside the roadway and give this section its character.

Practical

Parking areas are located at both ends of the structure and make it easy to reach the walkway for those who want to explore the section at a comfortable pace. On clear days the pedestrian side offers a chance to spot migrating whales or dolphins in the water.

Did you know?

This section is one of only seven parallel-to-coast structures worldwide that run above open water instead of hugging the shoreline directly. The curved path results from the need to bypass steep cliffs while creating a safe roadway at the same time.
