Crest Theatre, Granville, Heritage theatre in Granville, Australia.
The Crest Theatre is a heritage cinema in Granville with a vaulted-ceiling auditorium, steel frame construction, and concrete walls with stucco finish. The building features a corner entrance with a tapered vertical pier and now operates as a community center at 157 Blaxcell Street.
The building opened on Easter Saturday in March 1948 as a cinema with 852 seats in its original configuration. An electric organ played by Miss Ruby Coulson provided musical accompaniment during film screenings in those early years.
The interior shows art-nouveau decoration from the late 1940s, with original plasterwork and chandeliers that reflect how cinemas were designed during that entertainment era. These details remain visible today and reveal what people valued in a night out.
The building is centrally located in Granville and clearly visible from the street, making it easy to find. Access is straightforward, and the site is comfortable to reach on foot.
The building is one of only two remaining Quonset-style cinemas in New South Wales, showing how old military building styles were adapted after World War II for entertainment. This construction method was economical and quick to build.
