Stanmore House, Heritage residence in Enmore, Australia.
Stanmore House stands at 88 Enmore Road with a symmetrical Colonial Regency design featuring a central entrance, gable roof, and a one-story veranda wrapping the exterior. The building was divided into seven apartments during 1970, with three storefronts built along Enmore Road using part of the original garden space.
Built between 1847 and 1855, the house was commissioned by Mary Reibey to mark her daughter's marriage to Captain Joseph Long Innes. It represents an important period when wealthy families established grand suburban homes in the Newtown and Enmore district.
The house displays original cedar joinery and multiple fireplaces that reflect how wealthy Sydney families of the 1800s chose to furnish their homes. These details show the daily comforts and tastes that mattered to the upper class.
The building is now divided into private apartments and commercial spaces, so public access inside is not available. Visitors can view the exterior facade and architectural details from Enmore Road to appreciate the original Colonial Regency design.
Of the many Victorian villas that once defined the area, this is one of the last remarkably intact structures from that era. Its survival and protection under the State Heritage Register make it a rare example of this building style in the modern neighborhood.
