Grafton Bond Store, Heritage-listed warehouse in Millers Point, Sydney, Australia
The Grafton Bond Store at 60 Hickson Road is a warehouse with cream brick walls, stepped gable parapets, and timber structural elements throughout. Multiple interior levels connect through preserved wooden flooring and support systems, with modern office spaces now integrated into the structure.
Construction began in 1881 under architect William Wardell as part of a larger warehouse complex containing 14 buildings. The complex was designed to handle and store massive amounts of cargo moving through the harbor at that time.
The building shows Sydney's connection to Northern Europe through its architectural style and Victorian-era construction methods. These features remain visible today and shape how the place looks and feels.
The building sits directly on Hickson Road near the harbor, making it easy to locate and approach. Keep in mind that it functions as an active office building today, so public access may be limited in certain areas.
A sandstone wall surrounds the property, creating a physical boundary that once separated the entire harbor complex from the surrounding streets. This wall still connects Kent Street to Hickson Road as it did originally.
