Croydon Sewer Vent

Croydon Sewer Vent is a concrete ventilation stack rising from an octagonal base with a tapered circular shaft featuring reinforced ribs and a projecting cornice. The structure sits next to 12 Paisley Road and continues to serve its original purpose in the sewerage system.

The ventilation stack was built in 1922 by the Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage to manage gas issues from the Homebush Bay abattoir. It was a practical solution to a growing urban problem at that time.

The structure shows how early urban sanitation was handled and reflects the way public services developed in New South Wales. You can see how engineers of that time solved practical problems through visible building components.

The structure is located at Paisley Road and is easily visible from the sidewalk, giving you a clear view. Keep in mind the site remains active and the structure continues to serve the sewerage system.

The structure is one of only two similar constructions in Sydney, featuring decorative neoclassical console brackets beneath the cornice. These architectural details set it apart from ordinary ventilation shafts.
