The Bunyas

The Bunyas is a 1910 residence at 16 Deakin Avenue featuring a fine slate and terracotta roof with tall roughcast chimneys and two-tone brick construction. The building displays characteristic early Australian architecture from that era with generous proportions and period craftsmanship throughout its exterior.

The residence was built in 1910 and designed by architect John Spencer-Stansfield for Richard Stanton, an Irish immigrant who established a furniture business. It gained heritage protection in 1981 and underwent subsequent modifications including a fence and swimming pool.

The residence reflects Haberfield's transformation into a prosperous suburb through the introduction of steam tramways from Leichhardt, which connected the area and attracted affluent families. This growth shaped the neighborhood into a desirable place for successful business owners and professionals.

The house is easily accessible in an established residential neighborhood with good public transport connections to other parts of Sydney. As a private residence, it can be viewed from the street but interior access is restricted.

The building retains many original architectural elements that reflect the high craftsmanship of that period. It was officially placed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register in April 1999.
