Toowoomba, Inland regional center in Queensland, Australia.
Toowoomba is a city in Queensland located on a plateau in the Darling Downs region. The elevation creates a temperate climate with clear seasons, which is rare in this part of Australia.
European settlement began in the mid-19th century on the land of the Giabal and Jarowair peoples. From an agricultural community grew the largest inland city in Queensland.
The name comes from the local term for swamp cress and refers to the original vegetation of the region. Along the streets stand avenues of jacaranda trees, which bloom purple in spring and shape the cityscape.
The plateau sits about two hours by car west of Brisbane and is accessible via a main road through the mountain range. A nearby airport offers connections to larger Australian cities.
More than one hundred fifty public green spaces spread through the urban area and display both native and international plants. This wealth of gardens has earned the city its nickname as the Garden City.
