Darra, Administrative suburb in Brisbane, Australia.
Darra is a residential suburb in the southwest of Brisbane, with local shops, parks, and community facilities spread across its streets. It sits near the junction of the Ipswich Motorway and the Centenary Motorway, and has its own railway station on the Ipswich line.
The railway station opened in 1876, and its presence drew early settlement and light industry to the area over the following decades. By the mid-20th century, the suburb had grown into a mixed zone of housing and warehousing close to the rail corridor.
Darra has a large Vietnamese community, and this shows in the local shops, restaurants, and temples along the suburb's streets. Walking through the main roads, visitors find Asian grocery stores and small eateries that give the area a distinct everyday character.
The suburb is easy to reach by both train and car, and the railway station offers a direct connection to central Brisbane and toward Ipswich. Those arriving by road should note that the motorway interchange nearby can be busy during peak hours, so off-peak travel is simpler.
The suburb's name is believed to come from a local Aboriginal word, though its exact meaning has never been fully confirmed. Darra was also once home to a large cement works, and traces of that industrial past can still be noticed in some of the older buildings and land shapes around the area.
