Wheel of Brisbane, Observation wheel in South Bank Parklands, Australia
The Wheel of Brisbane is an observation wheel in South Bank Parklands with 42 enclosed capsules that rotate 60 meters above ground. The structure offers views across Brisbane, its river, and surrounding neighborhoods, with each capsule equipped with air conditioning.
The wheel opened in 2008 and was built to mark two important anniversaries: 20 years since the 1988 World Expo and 150 years of the state's history. It was positioned at the riverfront location to reflect the river's significance in the city's growth.
The wheel takes its name from the river it overlooks and has become a symbol of the park's waterfront character. Visitors experience a new perspective on the city's neighborhoods and landmarks from a vantage point that allows them to see how the urban areas connect to the surrounding landscape.
Each capsule holds up to eight people and a ride lasts about 12 minutes with four complete rotations of the wheel. The best time to visit is during clear weather, when you can see the farthest across the city.
The capsules feature an audio guide that narrates information about city landmarks visible from the wheel, such as the Botanical Gardens and Mount Coot-tha. This narration helps visitors identify different areas and understand their importance while looking down at the city.
