Commissariat Store, Brisbane, Colonial museum building in Brisbane City, Australia
The Commissariat Store is a three-story Georgian building in Brisbane City that houses exhibitions covering Queensland's early history and colonial period. Its rooms contain collections and archival materials that document how the region developed from its founding.
Built between 1828 and 1829 by convicts during the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the building originally served as a supply warehouse for the growing colony. Its construction marks an important moment in Queensland's early European history.
The name reflects its original purpose as a colonial supply point, and today its rooms display objects that show how early settlers and convicts lived. Walking through, you see everyday items and documents that reveal what daily life was like in the young colony.
The building sits in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from nearby attractions and transport hubs. Visitors should check opening hours in advance, as they are limited to certain weekdays and afternoons.
It is Queensland's oldest still-occupied building and one of only two structures surviving from the convict settlement era in the region. This rarity makes it a striking reminder of how few traces remain from that early period.
