The Westpac Bank Building is a six-story structure at 33 Queen Street in Brisbane's CBD featuring walls of Helidon freestone and a base of Uralla granite. Giant Ionic columns dominate the exterior, giving the building a classical and solid appearance.
The Bank of New South Wales established operations at this site beginning in 1851, and the current building was completed in 1930 by F J Corbett & Sons. This new construction represented a major modernization of Brisbane's financial district.
The banking chamber displays its original interior design with square columns topped by gilded Corinthian capitals. These architectural details create an impression of formality and stability that reflects the building's importance as a financial institution.
The building is easy to spot from outside on a main street in the business district. Interior access may be limited since the property is now privately owned and no longer operates as a bank.
The rooftop courtyard includes cast iron Ionic columns salvaged from the previous bank building that stood at this location in 1866. These rescued elements connect the history of two buildings across more than a century.
