Edwards and Chapman Building, Heritage retail building in Queen Street, Brisbane, Australia
The Edwards and Chapman Building is a three-story structure with a basement level located on Queen Street in Brisbane, featuring Italianate architecture and detailed stone work across its facade. Oval openings on each floor and high ceilings are engineered to maximize natural light and air flow throughout the interior.
This structure was built between 1881 and 1882, replacing former convict barracks that previously occupied the site. It originally served as a retail warehouse for the Edwards and Chapman drapery business.
The building displays Victorian commercial architecture with rounded arches and Corinthian capitals across its exterior. These features shape Brisbane's streetscape to this day.
The building is located in central Brisbane at 120 Queen Street, where visitors can easily view the facade from the street. The ground level continues to house retail functions, while upper areas serve different purposes today.
This building was deliberately designed with oval openings on each floor to enable optimal use of daylight and natural ventilation. This thoughtful engineering reveals how retail buildings of the 1800s balanced functional demands with visual appeal.
