Palings Building, Heritage listed building in Brisbane, Australia
Palings Building stands at 86 Queen Street in Brisbane and features three stories, a basement level, and brick walls on stone foundations. The structure was constructed in 1885 as part of a row of identical buildings and was later converted to commercial use.
The building was erected in 1885 as one of four identical structures, but was purchased by music entrepreneur William Henry Paling in 1886. It began operating as a music retail business from 1888 onwards.
This building served as Queensland's main destination for music lovers seeking instruments, sheet music, and recordings throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. Musicians and collectors came from across the region to purchase items and receive expert advice on their selections.
The building is located in Brisbane's central business district near the old Town Hall. It remains protected under heritage legislation, making it easy to identify and visit while exploring the downtown area.
From 1914 to 1974, the building housed Brisbane's primary ticket booking office for theatre and entertainment events. Technicians employed by the music company would travel to surrounding regions to maintain instruments and occasionally perform recitals for local communities.
