The Mansions, Brisbane, Heritage building in Brisbane, Australia.
The Mansions is a six-part terrace building made of red brick and stone-facing with deep arcades and octagonal bay projections running along George Street. The structure unites these individual sections into one connected composition that spans the street.
The building was created in 1889 by three influential Queensland politicians who established a major residential development during a period of population growth in Brisbane. This project reflected the economic expansion and urbanization trends of the era.
Dr. Lilian Cooper, the first registered female doctor in Queensland, opened her medical practice here in 1891 and created an important milestone for women in medicine. Her presence made this location a symbol of change and opportunity for women in a male-dominated profession.
The building now houses professional offices, retail spaces, and restaurants with renovation plans underway. Visitors can walk along George Street and use the arcades for shelter from sun or rain.
Each roof corner displays a decorative cat and ball element that, according to local belief, provided protection to the building. These whimsical details are visible from the street and give the place a playful character.
