Old Mineral House, Victorian heritage warehouse in Brisbane, Australia
The Old Mineral House is a five-story building on Edward Street with rendered brick walls, cast iron details, and broad segmental arches that define its classical appearance. The interior still retains its original cast iron columns and wooden beams from when it was first built.
The building was constructed in 1888 as a warehouse for Smellie & Co. and received two additional floors in the 1890s to meet the growing demands of the hardware importing business. It was registered on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992 and later became offices and learning spaces for different users.
The building served as a center for commerce and trade in Brisbane for many decades. Visitors can still see how the space reflects the business practices and needs of its era through its layout and design.
The building is easy to find on foot and its classical facade stands out along Edward Street even among modern surroundings. Visitors can enjoy the exterior anytime, though access to the interior may be limited by the current occupants and their operating hours.
The building was expanded gradually, reflecting how rapidly Brisbane's trade grew in the late 1880s. Its later conversion to offices and learning spaces shows how it adapted to new needs while preserving its core structure.
