Port Office Hotel, Heritage hotel in Brisbane City, Australia.
Description
The Port Office Hotel is a two-story building at the corner of Edward Street featuring brick walls and leadlight windows throughout. It has a corrugated iron roof and interior spaces that retain original timber details from when it was completed in 1876.
History
The building opened in 1864 as the Shamrock Hotel before undergoing complete reconstruction in 1876 under architect James Cowlishaw. This rebuilding created the structure that stands at the site today.
Culture
The hotel served as a gathering place for maritime workers and merchants during Brisbane's growth as a port city. Visitors can sense this connection to shipping life when they move through the preserved rooms and bars.
Practical
The building sits at a busy street corner in central Brisbane and is easy to find while exploring the downtown area. Late afternoon is a good time to visit, as the sun highlights the brickwork and makes the historic details easy to see.
Did you know?
The building has survived several major floods, including devastating flood years in 1893, 1974, and 2011 that caused substantial damage to the ground floor. These repeated water events required various restoration work that made the structure more resilient over time.
