Old Government House, Official residence in Brisbane, Australia.
Old Government House is a two-story Neoclassical building in Brisbane with symmetrical proportions, elegant columns, and an imposing entrance portico. The interior features high ceilings and formally arranged reception and living spaces with elaborate decorative details.
The building was constructed in 1862 under architect Charles Tiffin's direction and served as the governors' residence for over 40 years. It was home to eleven successive governors before this role ended in 1909.
The residence displays furniture and objects from different eras that show how Queensland's early leaders lived and worked. The rooms offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of that period.
The building is typically open daily to visitors and offers guided tours through the various rooms. Visitors should check in advance whether it might be closed for special events or if tours need to be booked ahead.
The house still contains its original cedar joinery and marble fireplaces from 1862, which have remained intact despite multiple renovations over the decades. These original elements offer a direct look at 19th-century craftsmanship.
