The venue opened on September 7, 1989, following the success of a temporary stage during World Expo '88, with Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson leading the inauguration.
Local and international musicians regularly perform at the River Stage, including notable acts like Daft Punk, Foo Fighters, and the final concert of Powderfinger.
The venue features both concrete and grass surfaces where visitors can bring blankets, while an additional screening area accommodates overflow crowds during sold-out events.
The River Stage was evacuated during a Tate McRae concert in November 2024 due to severe lightning, demonstrating the particular challenges of outdoor entertainment spaces.
