South Brisbane Library

South Brisbane Library is a three-story building with classical architectural features, including a ground floor arcade and verandahs on the upper levels. The facade displays craftsmanship from its era, with columns and decorative details that define its appearance.

The building was erected in 1881 following a design by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley and originally served as a post office. Over the following decades it underwent several transformations, serving different public functions.

The building once gathered craftspeople and technical students who attended courses and learned skills together in its spaces. It later became an art gallery where visitors could see works by local artists displayed across its rooms.

The building is located opposite the South Brisbane Municipal Chambers on Stanley Street and is easy to find in the area. Visitors should know that it is no longer open as a public library and currently functions as part of an arts school.

The building has a notable connection to the art world and once displayed works from a significant private collection. This artistic role gives the place a special story that extends beyond its library function.
