Gondwana Rainforest Sanctuary, Nature reserve in Queensland, Australia
The Gondwana Rainforest Sanctuary was a facility at South Bank Parklands in Brisbane that displayed Australian animals in naturalistic habitats. A network of walking paths wound through dense vegetation, where visitors could encounter native plant species from prehistoric times.
The facility opened in 1992 as a zoological space displaying around 700 Australian animal species in naturalistic settings. The project closed in 2005 and was later transformed into a mixed-use development called Riverside Green.
The site served as a place where visitors could learn about the relationship between Australian nature and indigenous peoples through interactive displays. Educational programs showed how land and people have been connected over time.
The location sits within an urban parkland area and is easily accessible on foot. The space has been transformed into a mix of shopping and green areas where visitors can walk and spend time outdoors.
The site featured large animated dinosaur models that showcased the prehistoric origins of Australian animal and plant life. These models made the experience especially memorable for younger visitors.
