Carmichael coal mine, Coal mine in Isaac Region, Australia.
Carmichael mine is a large-scale coal extraction site in the Galilee Basin of Queensland, where coal is removed through both surface and underground methods. The site covers several separate extraction areas, each with its own loading points and access roads.
Work on the site began following a multi-year approval process and legal disputes over environmental and land issues. The first coal shipment left the site roughly seven years after the original approval was granted.
Indigenous landowners presented concerns regarding the mine's impact on their territories, leading to legal proceedings about consultation requirements and land rights.
A private rail line carries the material from the extraction area to existing loading facilities on the coast. Operations run around the clock, with large vehicles and conveyor belts moving coal from the pit to loading points.
The original plans called for six times the current annual output, but the project was scaled back significantly after financing difficulties. Multiple international banks declined to provide loans, leading to a sharp reduction in planned extraction capacity.
